Review on Tribological Parameters of Fibre Reinforced Plastics Modified with Mineral Fillers

Authors(2) :-Lokesh KS, Dr.Thomas Pinto

It is more significant to evaluate the performance of composites filled with varied percentage of fillers on different properties of a material which is considered for specific operational environments. Glass fiber reinforced polymer composites find widespread applications these days in hostile environment due to their several advantages like high strength and increased wear resistance, strength-to weight ratio and low cost. In addition to this, the glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites, like any other fiber reinforced polymer composites, offer many advantages over the conventional structural materials. These materials have good corrosion resistance, good toughness and good insulation property. These properties have encouraged their use in several Civil Engineering applications, Aerospace Engineering, Transport and Marine Engineering. The performance of the composites can further be improved by adding fillers to them. The work aims at using Wollastonite as a filler material. The present work includes the processing, mechanical characterization and study of the wear behavior of a series of such CaSiCo3 (wollastonite) filled glass-epoxy composites. The work further assesses the wear behaviour of the prepared specimens upon thermal aging.
